Prion Disease: An Overview for Funeral Directors and Embalmers

Date Published: November 4, 2020

Summary

The National Prion Disease Pathology Surveillance Center. NPDPSC was established in 1997 at the Division of Neuropathology of Case Western Reserve University to monitor the occurrence of prion diseases or spongiform encephalopathies, in response to the epidemic of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), also known as "mad cow disease," which occurred in the United Kingdom during the 1980s. The Center acquires tissue samples and clinical information from as many cases of human prion disease occurring in the United States as possible in order to help monitor the possible occurrence of variant CJD (vCJD) in the USA. Once the precise type of prion disease (sporadic, familial, or acquired) has been established, the findings are reported to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), State Departments of Health along with patients physician(s). The Center also serves as a brain repository for members of the scientific community to aid in the advancement of testing and research.

Summary

COVID-19 is a novel virus that has apparently crossed species to become the cause of an international pandemic resulting in a death rate that has far surpassed the deaths resulting from several of our wars. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has been and continues to be a challenge to individuals, families, businesses, healthcare, and the country. It has challenged our preparation and our ability to respond to such an event. I will present issues from an infection prevention perspective both initially and to the date of this presentation.
